Stepping Up
At the beginning of the year I got a casual job.
I was assigned 13 hours a week to work at said job.
Perfect!
And then people went on holidays. Four people actually. Which meant that there were a lot of shifts that needed to be filled. So I put my hand up for some of them, after all, I said I would help out when they needed me to.
And then I was asked to do just one more extra shift a week, just for the three weeks said people were on holidays, so I said okay.
Then I was asked to pretty please help out for a couple of hours on one other day, so I begrudgingly said I would.
Then we had a staff meeting scheduled so I had to be at work at 7am and work until 5pm, taking the days I worked last week up to 6 and the hours up to 40.
Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed the boost to the budget from these extra hours, I bought Missy Moo this...
And her coordination is improving in leaps and bounds!
But it did leave me exhausted! And Missy Moo was affected by the lack of Mummy time.
She was more excited to see me which I loved, but at the end of the three weeks I feel like she's just a little bit more grown up, a little bit more independent, which I don't love!
Mr Hat and I decided that I shouldn't work more than 3 shifts a week from now on, it's too hard on our family otherwise and thankfully we are lucky enough that we can afford for me to be a SAHM. Being mum and employed in full time paid employment requires organisation skills I just hate utilising! Mum's who work full-time are superwomen in my opinion!
Although some days I must admit leaving the house to go to work is a nice change, and I do enjoy the adult conversations!
But I have to learn to say no!
No to the extra workload.
No to driving my daughter around to see relatives every week.
No to buying my nan what she needs every time when my sister lives 5 minutes away from her (not the 40 that we do) and doesn't have a 6 month old to cart to the shops.
Yes to relaxing a bit.
Yes to not stressing myself out so much.
Yes to spending more time sitting still playing with my daughter rather than running around so much!
Mr Hat said my problem is that I step up too much and I think he's right. I guess I always thought that if I stepped up when it was needed, others would step up for me when I needed them to. Unfortunately I seemed to have trained them to be lazy because I'll pick up their slack.
But it's time for them to step up because I'm stepping down.
Do you find it difficult to say no to people? Do you feel like you are the one constantly stepping up or do others step up for you too?
